Balloon garlands are one of the most versatile and eye-catching decorative elements for any celebration. From a child's birthday to a wedding, a bachelorette party, or a company inauguration — a well-assembled garland transforms any space into something special.
In this guide, we explain how to make a balloon garland step by step, what materials you need, how many balloons to buy, and the tricks we use at Narosa Sweet Party to make them perfect.
What is an organic balloon garland?
An organic balloon garland is a decorative composition made of balloons of different sizes intertwined, without a rigid structure, creating a natural and three-dimensional effect. Unlike traditional balloon arches — where all balloons are inflated to the same size and supported by a metal frame — organic garlands have a more dynamic, modern, and photogenic look.
They can be used for:
- Birthday tables and candy bars
- Photo booths and backdrops
- Entrances to venues and events
- Wall decoration for weddings or communions
- Shop windows and corporate events
Materials you need to make a balloon garland
Before you start, prepare these materials. The quality of the balloons makes a difference — biodegradable latex balloons maintain their size and color better for longer.
- Latex balloons of different sizes — ideally R5/13cm, R12/30cm.
- Manual or electric balloon pump — never inflate with your mouth, CO₂ discolors them
- Balloon decorating strip — this is the perforated plastic strip where the balloons are inserted
- Balloon hooks or clips — to attach the balloons to the strip
- Balloon glue dots — to fill gaps with small balloons
- Double-sided tape or hooks — to attach the garland to the wall or surface
How many balloons do you need for a garland?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions. As a general reference:
- 1 meter of garland → between 15 and 20 balloons (combining sizes)
- 2 meters → between 30 and 40 balloons
- Always add 10-15% extra in case any break during assembly
Remember: small balloons (R5/13cm) are used to fill gaps and do not need a strip — they are glued directly onto the larger ones with glue dots.
How to make a balloon garland step by step
Step 1 — Choose your color palette
Choose between 3 and 5 colors that complement each other. A tip: use two main colors, one accent color, and one neutral color (white, gold, or clear). For example: pink + purple + white + gold.
Step 2 — Inflate balloons to different sizes
Inflate the balloons in two different sizes using the pump: small (5-8 cm), medium (20-25 cm). Don't inflate them all the same — the variation in size is what gives the organic and natural effect.
Step 3 — Tie and group into clusters
Tie the balloons in pairs, then join two pairs by twisting them together to create clusters of 4 balloons. This is the basic unit of the organic garland.
Step 4 — Attach the clusters to the strip
Insert each cluster into the holes of the decorating strip, alternating colors and sizes. Rotate each cluster 45 degrees from the previous one so that the balloons point in different directions and the garland has volume in all dimensions.
Step 5 — Fill gaps with small balloons
Once all the clusters are assembled, use R5/13cm balloons and glue dots to fill any empty spaces between the larger balloons. This step is what distinguishes a basic garland from a professional-looking one.
Step 6 — Secure the garland in place
Use double-sided tape, wall hooks, or nylon string to hang the garland. For delicate surfaces, removable adhesive hooks are the best option — they won't leave marks.

Tips and tricks for a perfect garland
- Indoors vs. Outdoors: For outdoor use, choose thicker latex balloons — sun and heat deteriorate them faster.
- Duration: An air-filled garland lasts 3 to 6 days indoors. With helium, 12-24 hours.
- Temperature: Avoid assembling near heat sources or direct air conditioning — balloons can deform.
- In advance: You can assemble the garland the day before the event if it's indoors and air-filled.
- Biodegradable balloons: If the event is outdoors or you want an eco-friendly option, choose natural latex balloons — they decompose in an environmentally friendly way.
