If you're planning a celebration and want to use helium balloons, you've probably asked yourself: How long will they last? How do you inflate them correctly? Can they be inflated at home? In this article, we answer all these questions with clear data and practical tips to ensure your balloons look perfect on the day of the event.
How long does a helium balloon last?
The duration of a helium balloon mainly depends on the type of balloon and environmental conditions. Not all last the same — and knowing the difference will help you plan your decoration better.
Latex balloons with helium
Latex balloons are the classic round balloons. Being porous, helium gradually escapes:
- Indoors: between 12 and 24 hours
- Outdoors: between 6 and 12 hours — heat and wind accelerate helium loss
- With Hi-Float treatment: up to 2-3 days — this is a gel applied inside the balloon before inflation to reduce porosity. For us at Narosa, this is an essential step.
Foil or metallic balloons with helium
Foil, aluminum, or metallic balloons — such as number or shaped balloons — are made of metallic nylon, which retains helium much better than latex:
- Indoors: between 4 and 6 days
- Outdoors: between 2 and 3 days depending on heat and wind
Bubble and orbz balloons with helium
Bubble and orbz balloons are spherical, some transparent or with designs. Made of polymer, they offer exceptional durability: between 3 and 8 days indoors. They are the most resistant of all.
Factors affecting helium balloon duration
Beyond the type of balloon, several factors directly influence how long it floats:
- Temperature: heat expands helium and can pop the balloon; cold contracts it and makes it drop sooner
- Humidity: high humidity reduces duration, especially in latex balloons
- Direct sunlight: accelerates latex deterioration and reduces buoyancy
- Balloon size: larger size means more helium and longer duration
- Balloon quality: high-quality biodegradable latex balloons retain helium better than low-density ones
How to inflate helium balloons at home — step by step
To inflate helium balloons at home, you need a helium tank — available at Narosa. Follow these steps:
Step 1 — Prepare the balloon
Gently stretch the latex balloon with your hands before inflating it — this reduces the risk of it breaking and helps it take a uniform shape. Foil balloons do not need this step.
Step 2 — Place the balloon on the nozzle
Insert the tank nozzle into the balloon's opening and hold it firmly. For foil balloons, align the balloon's valve with the nozzle — you'll hear a small click as they fit.
Step 3 — Inflate with control
Open the tank valve slowly. Do not inflate the balloon to its maximum — leave a 10-15% margin so the helium can expand with heat without popping the balloon. A properly inflated 30 cm latex balloon should feel firm but have some flexibility when pressed.
Step 4 — Tie or seal
For latex balloons, tie the neck tightly. For foil balloons, the valve automatically seals when you remove the nozzle from the tank — no tying is needed.
Step 5 — Add weight
Always tie a decorative balloon weight to the string or ribbon to prevent it from flying away. This is especially important outdoors or near doors and windows.

Can helium balloons be inflated with normal air?
Yes, technically they can be inflated with air — but they will not float. Helium is lighter than air, which allows the balloon to float. If we inflate a balloon with normal air, it will weigh more than the balloon itself and fall to the ground.
Air-filled balloons are perfect for decorating walls, making garlands or columns — but not for floating bouquets. If you want balloons that float, you absolutely need helium.
Tips to make your helium balloons last longer
- Inflate the day before if indoors: foil balloons hold up perfectly 24 hours before the event
- Avoid direct air conditioning: cold causes balloons to drop sooner than expected
- Don't leave them in the car: the heat inside the car can pop them in minutes
- Use Hi-Float on latex balloons: multiplies their duration by 3-4 times
- For outdoor events: inflate the balloons just before the event and transport them in large, sealed bags
